If the paper copy is long gone, the manufacturer's website usually hosts a PDF once you enter the model number printed on the boiler's rating plate, often found on a sticker inside the front panel or on the underside of the casing.

Write down the exact code before you touch anything. If you reset the boiler and the fault clears for a while, that code may be the only record of what happened, and it is the first thing a technician will ask for.

The common categories behind most codes

Strip away the brand-specific labels and most boiler faults fall into a handful of families. Knowing the family helps you judge how urgent the problem is.

Low water pressure

A large share of lockouts trace back to pressure that has dropped too low for the boiler to fire safely. The gauge or digital readout will sit below the healthy band marked on the unit or described in your manual. Small drops over months are normal as tiny amounts of water leave the system. A sudden drop usually means air was released after bleeding radiators, or there is a leak somewhere in the pipework.

Ignition or flame failure

Another family of codes covers the boiler trying to light and failing, or lighting and then losing the flame. This can come from something as ordinary as an interrupted gas supply, or from a dirty flame-sensing electrode, a faulty gas valve, or a blocked burner. You can confirm the basics yourself: check that other gas appliances in the home are working and that the gas is on. Overheat and sensor faults

Boilers carry sensors that shut the unit down if the water gets hotter than it should.
