What you can safely do yourself

Step 1: Confirm and locate the blockage
Follow the condensate pipe from the boiler to where it exits the building. The ice plug most often forms at the most exposed points: an outdoor run, a bend or elbow, or the open end where the pipe meets the drain. Running your hand along the pipe, the frozen stretch will often feel colder.
Step 2: Warm the pipe gently
The goal is to melt the ice slowly and evenly. Apply warmth to the outside of the frozen section using a hot water bottle, a heat pack, or a cloth soaked in warm — not boiling — water. Thawing the pipe is a reasonable first response, but some situations call for a qualified engineer rather than a hot water bottle:

- You notice water leaking indoors, a burning smell, or any sign of a gas issue — treat anything suggesting a gas or carbon monoxide problem as an emergency and leave the property if you feel unwell.
- The same freeze-up keeps recurring, which usually means the pipe route or insulation needs a permanent fix.
